Hey Folks! I’m Miranda and am currently Co-President of Health and Wellness Movement with Stewart! I’m in my 4th year of my second degree, in Recreation, Sport, and Tourism - focusing on recreation! Who knew you could study that in University, hey?! I think moderation is the healthiest way to live, whether it be talking a short walk between classes, treating yourself to a sweet treat once in awhile, or just taking a rest day to recuperate and reset. We are all human and need to take care of ourselves as such. My interests are pretty varied, ranging from my background in anthropology and psychology to my ongoing passion about holistic health and wellbeing. I love to travel and experience what I can of the world – in fact, I am just coming off a semester abroad! When I am not studying, you can normally find me volunteering, spending time with my dog Alfie, watching horrible b-list horror movies, or crafting/creating all sorts of things! I really enjoy helping people and am always around to lend a hand or an ear. I am super excited to work with HWM this year and hope we can do some amazing things together!
Stewart Rowe | Co-President
My name is Stewart Rowe, and I am in my final year of a Biology/Psychology double major here at the U of A. Outside of school, I am regularly involved in playing sports, relaxing with friends and plotting new opportunities to travel. I have enjoyed 4 years of volunteering with HWM and I am excited to work side by side with the executive team this 2017-2018 school year to create a positive impact on the university community!
An Nguyen | VP Relations
Hi! My name is An and I am entering my last year to complete a BSc. in Kinesiology. I really like the idea of incorporating physical activity into one’s everyday life and framing physical exhaustion in a positive light. This can mean purposely parking in the furthest parking spot when going to a grocery store to get some extra steps in and feeling happy about being out of breath after carrying multiple loads of heavy groceries into the house. Besides health accessibility, a few things that get me really excited include: latte art and good coffee, hiking, live music, haunted houses, and new (novice) squash opponents. I believe so much in the mission and values behind HWM and am stoked to be a part of the exec team this year. I am always open to connect, so please don’t be shy to say “Hi!” if you see me around :).
Maria Choi | VP Communications
Hey, how goes it? My name is Maria and I am entering my third year of a double major in Biological Sciences and Psychology at the University of Alberta. I enjoy storytelling in different mediums, whether it’s through writing, reading, photography, filmmaking, or watching musicals and literary webseries. I am an avid fan of the colour purple, running long distances, volunteering, positive psychology, and yoga. After loving every minute of being a project manager of YOUnique and Flow Yoga for two years, I am ecstatic to work with the HWM exec team to lead events that contribute to a healthier U of A community. Feel free to answer my question from the beginning of this bio in person! I’m looking forward to meeting you. :)
Jamie Stark | VP Marketing
Hey! I’m Jamie, I’m entering my 4th and final year of my Honours BSc. in Molecular Genetics. I love genetics and also humans so I’m particularly interested in pursuing medical genetic research to improve the lives of those with inherited diseases. I truly believe in HWM’s mission to enhance the well-being of the student body by providing access to resources which promote various aspects of health. As a chronically busy person, finding a healthy balance is something I strive for but am still working on, so helping others find that balance is near and dear to me. HWM has been a huge part of my undergrad experience, it has helped me to make friends, take time for myself and learn new skills. My favourite colour is green and I aspire to become a crazy cat lady even though I’d really rather be a crazy dolphin lady. I enjoy playing soccer and running long distance. I’d also like to think I’m fairly artsy and love painting and sketching. I joined HWM in 2015 as a project Manager for YOUnique, where I was able to organize and participate in Paint Nights, among other things. I moved to YOUnique’s Project Lead and then to VP Operations last year. I look forward to continuing my journey with HWM this year as VP Marketing.
Ngan Tran | VP Finance
Hiya! My name is Ngan and I am VP Finance this year for HWM. I’m entering into my 3rd year of university and my 2nd year part of the Faculty of Business majoring in Finance and minoring in Operations Management. In addition to being part of HWM, I am also VP Academic External for the Edge Business Case Competition this year. I find that people can easily get caught up with their life and forget just how important leading a healthy lifestyle is - not just physical health but also mental health. With everything that life throws at us it can become hard to remember to take care of ourselves which is why i joined HWM - advocating not only for nutrition and physical activity but also for relaxation, stress relief, and much more. I have always been a very active person, constantly playing sports, some of which include volleyball, rugby, and Dragon Boat, however you can also catch me reading, listening to music, or hanging out with my friends - spending some time relaxing and enjoying all of the wonders that the world gives us. Looking forward to seeing some awesome events and meeting new people! If you see me around campus feel free to stop by and say hi!
Peter Johnson | VP External
Hi there! I am Peter and I’m currently diving into the final year of my Physiology program. Over the recent years, I’ve noticed that fellow students are falling into a vicious cycle of stress, unhealthy eating, insomnia, and no social interaction and at an alarming rate. Knowing this, I couldn’t sit still any longer, which is why I joined the Health and Wellness Movement. I anticipate to unite not only members of the HWM but also the entire campus community in our mission to tackle this dire plight and revolutionize the face of health eternally! Apart from my ambition to spread this initiative, in my spare time I enjoy running for support and health, creative writing and the sophisticated art of relaxation :)
Linh Tran | VP Operations
I'm Linh and I am currently the VP Operations for the Health and Wellness Movement. I am currently in my 3rd year, working on a Bachelors of Secondary Education with a major in math and a minor in human sciences. I want to eventually graduate and begin to teach math to junior high kids. I am super excited to be a part of the wonderful exec team we have assembled for this 2017/2018 school year. Now after being in school for so long and just seeing how it can affects people in different ways, I want to work with HWM in promoting a better, healthier lifestyle - mentally, physically and spiritually- for all students. I want to work towards spreading a message towards students that it's okay - maybe even necessary - to take a break from school and that the various events that the club holds are good for the mind, the body and the soul. I hope to help HWM bring fun times, stress-relieving events and educational opportunities to the University of Alberta campus and its students this year.
I'm always up to making new friends and meeting new people so totally come up to me and say "Hey!" if you ever see me around!
